Thrive Homes secures funding to assess heat network efficiency

Around 8,000 residents across England and Wales will benefit from £20 million allocated to improve 63 heat networks, enabling warmer, reliable and more cost-effective heating provision.

The Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES) supports improvements to existing district heating or communal heating projects through funding, and Round 7 marks the most funding awarded since the scheme began.

Thrive Homes, one of 22 housing associations awarded grant funding, will use this assess the efficiency of existing heat networks at two sheltered schemes in Hertfordshire.

Heat networks (also known as district heating) supply heat from a central source to homes via a network of underground pipes carrying hot water. Once completed, this HNES funded study will be a gateway to further green funding, enabling us to modernise existing systems, making these homes warmer and more energy efficient.

Assessing the effectiveness of existing heat networks is part of Thrive’s wider programme to decarbonise homes, resulting in better energy efficiency helping customers to save on energy bills and reduce carbon emissions.

James Ross, Director – Assets, said: “We’re thrilled to receive this funding through the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme, which enables us to take a crucial step in assessing the efficiency of our heat networks. This initiative is part of our wider commitment to make our homes warmer and more energy efficient for our customers.”
