Elspeth Mackenzie, Chief Executive, Thrive Homes comments on the tragic death of Awaab Ishak

25th November 2022

The tragic loss of Awaab Ishak is deeply saddening and our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Providing safe, well-maintained homes and ensuring our customers’ voices are listened to and acted upon is at the centre of our responsibility as a social landlord. We are continuing to work with our customers through Home Plan visits where potential issues – such as mould and damp - can be identified and managed before they become a serious problem.

In a recent letter to all social housing landlords, Michael Gove MP asked us all to undertake a full assessment of damp and mould cases in our homes and take action accordingly. This is something that we are already committed to delivering. We take this matter very seriously and have increased our focus in this area to ensure that issues are being addressed appropriately.

Further information and advice on how to deal with condensation and mould is available on our website: thrivehomes.org.uk/damp-and-mould/

We will continue to support our customers and implement any new safety recommendations that are issued as a result of Awaab’s tragic death.
