Thrive Homes' Silver Surfers

Residents of Thrive Homes' sheltered housing have been given the opportunity to learn how to ‘surf the net' for free.

Free training has been provided by Thrive Homes for 36 tenants who have shown an interest in learning how to send emails and use the internet. The training takes place each week at the Ascend centre in South Oxhey, each course lasting 6 weeks. Free transport is also provided.

The courses have been very well received and demand for places on the courses is growing. Luckily, they all have access to a computer which has been installed by Thrive Homes in the communal lounges at every sheltered housing scheme. Residents are able to practice their newly acquired surfing skills and as one resident found, answer a tricky question by using a search engine such as Google! (why WAS Joan Rivers taken off the show Loose Women?!)

It is hoped that the training will also enable the more frail and less mobile residents to make use of services like home shopping and delivery services - but most of all that it is fun and a sociable way of learning new skills.
